"Clean-up, Fix-up" Wrap-up and Giveaway Winners!

See Sharyl juggle...

Go, Sharyl, go!

You see what happens when I juggle?  And the next thing you know, balls are all over the ground!   ...Thank goodness I was more timely in getting the blog hop page posted 2 weeks ago than I have been about blogging since then!

I want to SINCERELY THANK all who participated in the "Clean-up, Fix-up Your Workspace Challenge and Blog Hop!"   I'm glad that the idea resonated with you and you took the time and effort to join in!    Thanks to those who cheered us on with comments too!   Every bit helped!  You saw those tidy, creative work spaces re-emerge, and hopefully all found some new, inspiring ideas!

GIVE-AWAY ANNOUNCEMENT:

I promised give-aways of some of the goodies unearthed during my clean-up!   While tidying my tables, I unearthed single beads, packets of beads, components I had made, and more!   I've divided those into 3 groups and added ribbons and something made by a bead artist to make sure you each had something special in your packet.

Everyone who posted for the blog hop was eligible for the random drawing.   The following 3 people have won a package:

Heidi Kingman
Helen Simon
Natalie Pappas

Please get back in touch with me by Friday to claim your prize.  You can just leave me a message here with your mailing address and I'll ship you your winnings.  I WON'T post your address on the blog!   I'll draw again if the prizes are not claimed.

Below are photos of prizes, but I'm not telling which one goes to which person, so there's still an  element of surprise!  ;-)

I hope the winners will have fun with their bits of this and that!

BONUS:

Items will be packed in a small plastic storage container, so the beads don't scatter all over clean work spaces!  ;-)

Thank you again!   Best wishes to all!

"Summer Color Inspiration Challenge" Wrap-up & Prize Winners

Blog Hop Wrap-up:

This blog hop got its start in the most unusual way.   As you may recall, it didn't begin as a blog hop at all!  On July 13, I wrote a blog entry, showing you some photos I had taken of a bouquet.  They were "macro" shots, closeups of different parts of the bouquet, and I had photographed it in my light tent, as an experiment.

What started as a blog entry about the colors of the flowers, and how color was an inspiration for my jewelry-making, turned into a challenge to you.  I invited you to select your favorite color combinations from the photos and to contribute photos of jewelry made to match those colors.  I thought I would print on my blog--lucky to get a couple of participants.

And you pleasantly surprised me by having enough sign up that we moved the format to a blog hop!

I must tell you, that even though it was a small, impromptu, casual type of blog hop, I've seen some of the most impressive, colorful, and creative designs I could have hoped for!   Your designs sang and danced of summer color!   They made me want to skip and turn cart wheels!   (I said "want to!")   They delighted me in every way!   Thanks to all who participated, all who commented, all who joined us and hopped along!

Drawing:

I promised at the start that one of the participants would win a colorful prize from me.   As you know, I selected one of the more pastel photographs for my necklace design, (click here for reveal results) but I was also drawn to this color combination--about as much different in color shades as I could get!

#7:   fushia, violet

And so I designed this pair of earrings for the give-away:

These are raw brass filigree components I've patinated with dark violet and pink.
I used gunmetal wire and earwires. The glass accent beads
are clear, hot pink, and dark violet.

Then, because I always seem to make long, long dangly earrings, I challenged myself again, to make a shorter pair.  I found this so much more difficult!   You might not guess it from looking at these, but I restacked these beads countless times trying different bead combinations, trying to keep them petite, the color and size balance right, match any one of the flower photos, and still come up with something wearable!

Here is my end result:

#2:  lime green, yellow, pinkish-red

So simple ...and yet so challenging...for me.   :-)
(Lime lampwork spacer beads are from Serena's Beadery, aka "Taneres.")

So I promised we would have a drawing from among those who participated in this blog hop, and instead of having one winner, we'll have two!

The winner of the earrings to match photo #7 is:
 Kashmira Patel!

The winner of the earrings to match photo #2 is:
Lisa Lodge!

Final Bit of Gratitude:

I've mentioned the bouquet in the photographs that inspired us all several times but not where it came from.   I owe a final bit of gratitude for those flowers to one from among us.   One day towards the end of winter, when I had completely had it with blizzards and shoveling driveways and walkways day-after-day, a lovely bouquet arrived to cheer me.   I couldn't imagine who would send me flowers!   But the note told all...they were from my online, jewelry-designing, always supportive, fellow night-owl friend, Laren Dee Barton, of Laren Dee Designs!  Don't you just love people who do such kind things for no reason besides they know you could use some cheer right at that time?   So while I don't wish to embarrass her, I do wish to thank Laren, for her thoughtfulness on that day, and for inspiring this event!

And my thanks to ALL of you for participating!  ~Sharyl

P.S.  We've been talking a lot about colors.  Next time, we'll talk a little about numbers!

Final note for today--New shop opening:

Norbel Cylkowski Marolla has just opened a jewelry store on Etsy called "She Flies Again."  Her friend and colleague, Kashmira Patel, tells you about Norbel, this unique shop, the history behind the store name, and the "collective" they hope for in her latest blog post!

The Wedding: Anxiously Waiting for the Big Day!

Some of you may recall my blog entry in May, "The 'Non-Reveal' Post," in which I spoke to you about making jewelry for my niece's upcoming wedding!    (I admit it, I've spoke of little else for months!)

At that time I had 15 items complete.

Latest (and possibly last)* Score:

Nearly 40 handmade jewelry items made for the bride and her wedding party!

*I'm taking my tools along so there's still a possibility of more!

The long-anticipated day is fast-approaching now!   Everyone has been busy with preparations.   The bride-and-groom-to-be seem calm as ever.

The jewelry is finished.  Everything has been "bride-approved."   The jewelry is carefully wrapped and tied up in boxes, name tags attached, packed in a large bag, and is ready to be delivered when the time is just right!  (Do you sense any excitement?!)

I've learned things I didn't expect to learn with the wedding project.  I'll be sharing more with you in the near future when I can show you some photos.

I worked with a partner, my niece, as in essence this was one large custom project, but I was given a great amount of freedom.    Nearly all the pieces ended with designs other than those we started with!   Luckily, my niece is very flexible and has a great sense of design and fashion!

The bride-to-be at her wedding shower.

I can't begin to tell you or her how much this experience has meant to me.   She's very special to me and our family.  This has been my chance to be part of her day in my own unique way.  I'm so glad she trusted me with the task, and hope everything has turned out to make her wedding day the best it can be.

Beyond that, I hope their marriage is full of love, respect,  eternal kindness, happy days, cherished moments, and years that go on and on...

Happy wishes to all!

~Sharyl

P.S.  I must thank my two guys who didn't fuss when I took over the dining room as well as my office/workshop for jewelry-making during this time!   They have been very patient and supportive in many ways, and I'm grateful!

Please share your wedding jewelry stories in the comments!   It can be jewelry you made for a wedding, jewelry you wore at your wedding, or anything related to jewelry and weddings!

Thank you for your patience!   It was wonderful having so many people comment on the blog and sign up for a chance to win the $25 gift certificate to Laren Dee Designs on Etsy!

If you've been reading closely, you realize that when the winner of the $25 gift certificate makes their purchase in Laren's store,  offers from Laren's anniversary celebration event immediately kick in!

Welcome to Val's Ceramic Garden!

The talented Valarie Garber opened her Etsy shop,  ValsCeramicGarden, on Jan 29, 2013.   In that short time, she's already become quite a sensation!   And there are so many good reasons why.   Let me name just a few!

Valarie does beautiful work on so many different levels.

1) One area involves her ceramics.   As she says in her shop announcement, "I love clay and color, and adore gardens! Using porcelain, stoneware, or fired paper clay I focus on detailed hand painting usually with a floral theme."

I'll show you a few of my favorites currently available from her store.  I will tell you, I've already made two visits and snatched up other favorites, but she just keeps adding more new ones!

Turns out, I love flowers too... and I'm really into coral this year.... AND, I have a special fondness for polka-dotted ceramic beads!   :-)   How did Val know?!

Dainty ceramic flowers
I bought one of these early this Spring. Can you guess which one?    Now sort of wish I had one of each!   :-)   Aren't they fun?

Double Daisy Ceramic Pendant
Val also sells these lovely (what I call, "3-D" flowers) in many varieties!   Just beautiful!

Of course, there are more than flower pendants, you'll also find the cutest birds, beads, mugs, and fairy garden cottages!

2) Now if the ceramic work wasn't beautiful enough all on its own, there's more beauty going on behind the scenes!   Profits from Val's Ceramic Garden benefit her African women's project, "Work of Our Hands."  Beads sold in the Etsy shop may be made either by Val or by women from Namibia.  The description specifies which is the case. (I've purchased some of each and can assure you, either way, you get a great piece!)

Val has also just opened another store, GlobeIn, so that she can sell the finished jewelry the Namibian women make at fair trade value.

When in Namibia, Val spends a lot of her time teaching the women to make ceramics.  Below are a few photos of the women involved in the project:

I do hope you'll take time to read more about Val's life here and abroad, and read about the artisans in Africa, by looking at "The Work of Our Hands" blog!

And once more, (don't get spoiled, we can't do this every week!)... we'll have a GIVE-AWAY!   Val has generously donated some items so we'll have double-the-goodies!

Gift Set #1:  Flower & Leaf + Baby Elephant

Gift Set #2:  Orange Elephant + Blue Bird Pendant

To be entered to win, please visit one of Val's stores and/or her blog, come back and make a comment  here.  Please leave me some way to contact you.  (If you would rather your contact info not be made public, please leave a separate message with the contact info and I won't post that one.)

Deadline to enter is 10pm Central time Saturday April 20, 2013.    Two names will be randomly chosen from those who enter!

My sincere thanks to Val Garber for taking the time to work with me on this entry and for being the wonderful giving person that she is!   A special thanks too for donating items for the give-away!   Best wishes in your very fine endeavors!

~Sharyl

Photography Practice: Early Spring Macros

While "i Heart macro" on Lori Plyler's website is no longer operating, I still want to continue practicing my macrophotography when I can, giving myself a little freedom to include things beyond the world of jewelry on Sundays.   Nature always makes a good subject!   And I'll focus on Early Spring today!

I walked around the yard a few minutes Saturday and, thanks to the fact that my family cleaned leaves from the yard all day while I worked inside, I could see that the green grass was growing up thick and strong, and would be ready for mowing in a day or two.

I couldn't help but recall that less that 2 weeks ago, the front yard looked like this:

Today it looked like this:

and this:

(Note:  I'm very new to bird photography.
I've only tried a few other photographs.
In some, the bird had already left the frame!

For truly beautiful bird images,
be sure to visit my friend's website,
Carole is from Lake Macquarie, N.S.W., Australia.
The wildlife and plants are amazing there.
It's such a treat to follow her blog!
....Now, back to our regularly scheduled broadcast!)   :-)

On the north side of our house, a lilac bush is budding out:

It took us 2 days longer than other yards
in the neighborhood to have all the snow melt from the yard.
We seem to be behind on blooming trees and bushes this year too.

I found this beauty down the street though!

Thanks for joining me for a little walk through the yard today!
Maybe we'll venture into the back next week...or the Japanese garden!
We'll no doubt follow the blooms.

Have a good week!

~Sharyl

Thursday, March 21, 2013

Oh, wa-hoo!

As you can see, I'm pretty excited!   The March/April 2013 issue of Step-by-Step Wire Jewelry Magazine is out and while I knew some of my components were going to appear in it,...well, I'm just extra-hyped all over again!   Perhaps at some point this becomes less of a big deal, (really?) but since this is just my 2nd jewelry publication, I'm excited.   My thanks to Denise Peck, Editor-in-Chief!

And I'm extra-excited when I see the names of those appearing in this Artisan Showcase of Components!     People I now "know" through their publications, blogs, Facebook pages, discussions on Creative Bead Chat, and participation on Artisan Whimsy!   Stores I buy beads from!  People I converse with!   (And the few I didn't know well, I immediately set out to meet and explore what they make!)

Below is the list with links to their stores:

Now all this got me to thinking, "EEKS!   I should be adding new components to the store!"  So I got busy  working on those.   Of course they can't be made in a day.  The layers of patina and sealant require drying time.   But I'll give you a  "sneak peak" of one of the batches of work in progress and a few new designs on the way for spring!

Coming soon to Sharyl's Jewelry
in the following sections:

Many more new raw brass designs have just arrived awaiting to be transformed and an order of copper sheet metal I've been long-awaiting should arrive tomorrow!  So there will be more original components too!   (And a special someone has a special order I'll get busy on then too!)

Hope you all enjoy visiting and shopping for new beads and components!

Happy Spring!

~Sharyl

P.S.  The beads and components are terrific and so are the photographs and layout!   (Thanks to the contributors and the Interweave publishers and editors!)
